Description
In September 1965, Pakistan launched an attack towards the Akhnoor Bridge, and badly outnumbered Indian ground forces had to rely on air support. Over the next 22 days the air war was fought at around 15,000 feet — with the Indian Air Force flying ageing Vampires, Toofanis and the nimble Gnat against Pakistan’s newer F-86 Sabres and F-104 Starfighters.
Drawing on archival records and first-hand accounts, Air Marshal Philip Rajkumar — who flew in the 1965 war and later became a pioneering test pilot and a key figure in the Tejas programme — and Shiv Kunal Verma, filmmaker and military historian and author of 1962: The War That Wasn’t and 1965: A Western Sunrise tell the story of the IAF pilots who took on a better-equipped enemy.
