The controversial legacy of Tipu Sultan continues to confound India and its contemporary politics. His father, Hyder Ali, had risen through the grace of the Maharaja of Mysore. However, the shrewd and opportunistic Hyder overthrew his own patron and usurped the throne of Mysore from the Wodeyar dynasty in 1761. Tipu’s easy rise to power, fueled by the arrogance and war-mongering of this success, led him to launch deadly attacks on Malabar, Mangalore, Travancore, and Coorg. Tipu was a courageous soldier and a skilled administrator. However, his shortsightedness in religious matters disrupted the balance Hyder sought to maintain with the Hindu majority.
