Sheela’s Two Homes – Nina Sabnani

Description

Sheela is a happy little girl in Sukkur, in Sind, who loves playing with her friends and sewing dresses for her dolls. She lives with her uncle, whom she calls Baba, just across the road from her parents. The talk of politics before Independence hardly touches her world — until Partition arrives suddenly and changes everything.

Based on the author’s mother’s own childhood, this moving picture book tells of a girl who grows up across two countries, with two fathers and two homes. Nina Sabnani, an animator and filmmaker, illustrates it with fragments of cloth and touches of embroidery, continuing a story she first told in an animated film.
