Description
Tsewang Yishey Pemba was the first Tibetan to enter a British university to study medicine. In 1966 he was awarded the Hallett Prize by the Royal College of Surgeons. At hospitals in northeast India and at their residences, Dr Pemba treated hundreds of Tibetan refugees, including some of the greatest contemporary Tibetan spiritual masters – the Sixteenth Karmapa, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Kalu Rinpoche, Dudjom Rinpoche, Chadral Rinpoche, Drukchen Rinpoche, Jamyang Khyentse Choekyi Lodoe, Sakya Dagchen, Thugsey Rinpoche, Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok and many others. Journal of A Doctor presents ‘as impartial a view as possible, steering a “middle path” between blind sycophantic eulogy and rabid prejudiced criticism, and occasionally a clinical surgeon’s-eye-point-of-view as if a camera was panning the scene of unfolding events,’ as Dr Pemba says here himself.
